What a treat, judging at Windsor for the first time and then all four days. Extra treat: awarding CC’s in three breeds for the first time, all representing a fascinating history that started in Good Old England, one of them being the Bull Terrier. It will be difficult to come up with a more intriguing breed than this one with so many truly inspiring breed enthusiasts. I feel more than privileged that one of them has been my teacher, the deceased Jacob Bouma of Polytelis fame. I vividly remember literally every kennel visit – difficult to forget anyway, first and for all thanks to his ‘room filling’ personality and more than outspoken ideas and opinions about breeding and judging. He was keen to help me become familiar with his breed, because of my background in Bully and Mastiff breeds. All very inspiring, still is... before my judging of the Bull Terrier at Windsor I was ‘talking’ to him. He did not haunt me the night after, so I presume he was okay with my findings.
The general impression the breed gave me on the day was one of quite a bit of variation in type and size. I considered the average quality of the bitches better than that of the dogs, but in both sexes I was invited to go for some serious comparing before making the ultimate decisions. Again in general I did not notice major differences with the Bull Terriers entries I’ve judged in other countries, but one thing struck me though, because I did not expect it perhaps: the colour of eye. Quite a few were at least a bit light. It seems to become a serious problem in many more breeds wherever one goes. It is something that really bothers me, especially in a breed like the Bull Terrier, or the Bulldog for that matter, in which an eye cannot be dark enough.
Bites were less than an issue, again compared to what I am used to, in fact I’ve seen some real impressive sets of teeth in highly typical heads at this Windsor Show, really nice! Says someone who is not too critical on the set of incisors – isn’t it Jacob? – it’s all about comparing and weighing the pros and cons – yes, Jacob. There was only one dog that I could not give what he – a true stallion – begged for as soon as he came in to the ring, because of his mouth; such a pity (instead of Jacob he was the one who ‘haunted’ me afterwards).
I like to think that my CC winners had something extra to offer; quality. In that respect my Best Male filled the ring as no other Bully did that day, what a presence! Still it did not take me too long to go for the Bitch for the BOB, as she offered the complete picture, she stood out from all angles. Must admit that I was quite thrilled when hearing that she, in the meantime, has already become a Champion, so soon after her first ticket at Windsor; so nice to have been able to play a small part in this remarkable culture of making up champions in ‘no time’ which is an integral part of the British Bull Terrier scenery.
As you can read, plenty of reasons to look back to this first with all possible pleasure. But that’s only half of the story. I really have to show my gratitude to my ring stewards who were extra efficient and most enjoyable and the breed enthusiasts who came over for a chat after it all was done. Thank you ever so much!
