I was delighted to have a second chance to judge BTs and Minis at Crufts, after my 2000 appointment took place in early recovery from a brain tumour. That said, I was very sorry this second invitation only arose due to the unexpected death of David Harrison (Sandawana), who was originally due to judge and must pay tribute to David and mourn his passing.
The day was full-on, starting Minis promptly at 9:00am and not finishing BTs until just before 5:00pm, with only 20 minutes break in between. Many thanks to all exhibitors for presenting an entry of 57 (for the record: in 2000 I had 84 dogs, making 92 entries with 16 absent), including 7 from overseas, with 8 Absentees, reflecting a 20% increase on last year’s 48. As lower entries are now the new-normal from consistently higher entries of 30 years ago, I was absolutely delighted with the entry, turnout and depth of quality across both sexes, particularly the bitches, which were a joy to go over.
I found my DCC in Mr and Mrs Littlefair’s powerhouse of a dog Dikram Midnight Dream, and BCC and BOB in Frank Dyson’s exquisite Tawnbarr Starlight, providing me the added bonus of making her up.

1st LARONBELLE'S MAGIC VISIONS (MRS A & MR A TWYMAN)
Substantial white with a good strong head, with down-face, depth and a correct mouth. Long neck, decent shoulder and good front. Level topline with good tail carriage into shapely quarters, moving freely and with power.
2nd ALDAMAR POWER STORM AT PHUNSIZE SHCM (DR A & MR R BENNETT & PICKERING)
Quality black brindle and white in excellent condition for his 10.5 years. Good head with a correct mouth. Little upright and not as short as above, but a pleasure to see and a real credit to his owners and excellent young handler.

1st BLUEPOINT PATCHOGUE (MR M & MISS A DODD & ROWLANDS)
Beautifully headed white with arc, width, fill and good dark eye and correct mouth. Plenty of bone and substance with a deep brisket. In good condition with well angulated quarters and, once he got in to his stride, moved well. I describe him as “only 8 months old and a bit of a silly baby”. Bless.
2nd NEVERLAND DEVILS OWN (MRS D Y GODSALL)
Lovely, upstanding and masculine red and white. Very typy with a lovely head, having arc, width fill and depth. Good round bone and substance and in excellent condition. Although striking from the outset, in the absence of a vet’s report I was unable to place him higher due to him apparently losing a canine due to a cage incident, with his remaining canine unfortunately tight.

1st BESKERMENGEL GOLDEN SIRIUS (MRS K MCPHERSON)
Beautifully rich brindle and white: Lovely well arced head with width, fill, depth and turn. Mouth a bit messy, with crowded incisors in-and-out, but with correct canines. Good neck into correct shoulder, good topline, well angulated quarters and good tail carriage – would like tighter feet.
2nd CIVERT STOP THE CAVALRY (MRS J HEDGES)
I really liked this feller: lovely strong, well-arced head, with arc, width and fill – ear carriage just detracting from the picture. Very typy with plenty of bone and substance. A little tucked-up, but his main cross to bear is his front, where he toes-out quite markedly on his right foot. Very typy and showing well.
3rd DITON DIXIELAND WITH PUSISSANCE (MESDAMES M & C MARTIN & VANSTONE)
White with good clean lines. Good shoulder, depth and topline. Toes out a little in front and would like more rear angulation.

1st TILLEAH JESSEE JAMES (MISS & MR L A & S SCOTT & SUTCLIFFE)
Strong winning red and white. Lovely strong head, masculine with arc and depth, would like a little more width. Good neck into correct shoulder and topline and shapely quarters, with tight feet and moving well both ways. Well-presented and handled, in excellent condition with a lovely tight coat.
2nd COOLBULS KINGSTON TOWN AT KRAWEN (MR & MRS S J & K J BROWN)
Upstanding black brindle and white with a well-arced head with depth, a good expression and dark eye, would like a bit more width and fill. Little narrow in front, but good tight feet, correct topline into shapely quarters, moving well both ways.
3rd UKUSA PORTHOS (MISS & MR S A & D J ARMSTRONG & VON MEMERTY)
Good strong head, with arc, finish and a good expression. Good bone, with straight front, correct topline into shapely quarters and good tail carriage. Bit out of coat and just losing out in condition to above today.

1st UKUSA HELLACIOUS (MR & MRS R & E MUNDY)
Imposing and upstanding red and white, I describe as ‘burnished copper’ enjoying his day and making the best of himself. Lovely head with arc, wide and well-turned – incisors correct, canine a bit tight but not instanding. Well balanced with good bone and substance. Good front, right foot just toeing out a little. Tail a bit high-set and topline slips a little when not on his toes.
2nd UNFAILLING MOULIN ROUGE (ATCAV00188FRA) (MISS A CHAUBE)
Quality all-white with a good strong head with arc, turn and good eye – ears not quite on top. Good bone and substance, toes-out slightly but good topline and tail carriage into shapely, well developed quarters, moving very well.

Extremely impressive and powerful tricolour. Tremendous bone and substance, oozing power. Glorious head with sweeping downface, depth, width, turn and full to the brim. Great expression with a tiny eye, level bite. Good shoulder with adequate front, correct topline into well angulated quarters, moving well both ways. Pleased to award him DCC
2nd BEEBEEMI GRANDMASTER FLASH (MISS DONNA MITCHELL)
Very attractive red and white putting in a great performance to secure a demanding and heavily contested 2nd place. Good strong head without exaggeration, with decent profile with finish, width and fill, would like a little more arc. Well balanced, standing fore-square with long neck into well-placed shoulders, good straight front and tight feet. Correct topline into shapely quarters, which he used to good effect on the move, being an excellent mover behind. In superb condition, making the very best of himself and a credit to his owners. RDCC
3rd CH BROOKBULLY AVENGER (MR J EMETT)
I really liked this dog: a beautiful head, which is a pleasure to handle: having arc, width, fill, depth and turn with a punishing expression, presenting text-book type. Excellent bone and substance. Not he rear angulation of above and seeming to lose a bit of steam at the crunch-point, recording “…a lovely dog: if he’d stood-up and shown would have been fighting for top-spot!”

What a lovely line-up I was treated to in this class, where I would happily award a CC of all of my placings, with need to leave some good bitches unplaced.
1st RABRAM ROLLING DEEP (MR R LEGGATT)
Powerful, feminine white with oodles of substance and bone to carry her powerful frame. Exquisite power-packed head with arc, width, fill, depth and a punishing expression. Stands four-square with good shoulder, decent front, with the right foot just toeing out a little. Well angulated, powerful quarters moving well, with real drive behind. A strong winner in this class, presenting the bitter-sweet challenge of having to choose between her and ‘Starlight’ for the CC. Both are of similar calibre, so having to resort to nit-picking differences, with this girl’s slightly untidy incisors just splitting the difference. An honour to have two bitches of such excellent quality in the ring at the same time. RBCC
