Always a pleasure to judge this breed with its unique ways and character, quite a challenge physically as they are so strong and athletic. Show training is not high on the agenda for Bull Terrier exhibitors and many took some time to settle down to something like a normal trot. They were all good natured and energetic, so with a bit of patience we got there eventually.
Some of the classes were a bit thin on the ground and lacking quality. The bitches generally were of better quality and type, mouths weren’t too bad but several had poor feet. Gay tails on the move were fairly common and spoils the finished picture. But the worst today was the dreaded clown paint which you can’t even wipe off. My suit went straight to the dry cleaners and my hands were white and greasy, horrible stuff. There is nothing wrong with chalk if used properly and brushed out. Driving home I passed White Waltham Place and the famous kennels on the other side of the road. Recalling so many happy times going to the trophy shows, visiting Mr Oppenheimer at home, taking overseas friends to see the dogs and puppies. That was such a different world and it started me thinking of all those clever old breeders no longer with us. I can remember like yesterday judging my first ever veteran stakes class at an all breed championship show where a lot of famous dogs from a cross section of breeds were entered. Although a bit stiff in movement and with a few missing teeth, there he was, Ch Abraxas Audacity, still with that Bull Terrier swagger and true magnetism – he gave me the look, that piercing glint that no other breed possesses and of course he won. You never forget moments like that. Open Bitch Entries 14 Absentees 1 What a class, a ring full of good bitches, really made my day.
