I was delighted to get the chance to judge at Crufts for a 2nd time. We hit the ring at 9am sharp with a pleasing entry of 64. Generally speaking, movement was disappointing but I found mouths much improved. The quality of my main winners was second to none, all four having correct bites and moving well behind - there was genuinely only a whisker separating them.
Before the critiques, can I make a couple of pleas to exhibitors; firstly, trim your whiskers and tails – it makes a world of difference, secondly, unless your dog is trained to the ‘nth degree’ please hold the loop of your lead in your right hand and use your left as a brake – old school I know but (trust me) it works, making the job easier for you, the dog and the judge.

10 years, Black brindle and white in fabulous condition, strong masculine head with a beautiful head in profile, one instanding canine. Super straight front, good shoulder, correct topline and well angulated quarters. He moved out really well front, back and side. Please to award him Best Veteran.BV
2nd TILLEAH JESSEE JAMES AT DOTANNEBULL (MRS & MR L A & S SUTCLIFFE)
8 years, another strong masculine dog in great condition, head is broad and strong with not quite the profile of the winner – he too is very well made and covered the ground with ease but was just a little close behind.

1st VATAHA THE KINGPIN (MR T HORTON)
Red and white 10 months, quite mature for his age and presented in good condition, he has a good head in profile but I’d like a little more width and fill, mouth is correct. His front still has some tightening to do and he needs to build more muscle on his well angulated quarters (I’d recommend some good steady road work which will help in both these areas). A typey and attractive pup.

1st DEVARCA ANYTHING GOES (MRS & MR R & J SULLIVAN)
Really masculine and attractive brindle and white, he’s very well balanced with a lovely strong head, correct arc, good wide muzzle and filled right up, mouth is correct, to be picky his ears could be a bit more on top. Lovely bone with a super straight front and good forechest, correct shoulder and topline with strong quarters. He moved out strongly, good in front and side but a little close behind (get someone you trust to watch him move – you may well find a better pace). Very promising youngster.
2nd STARCINCO A MILLION DREAMS AT BOWNESBULLS (MR & MRS D & J BOWNES)
Upstanding white, not the strength of head of winner, mouth is correct. Rather on the leg still and has a lot of maturing to do, tail rather gay but he’s an enthusiastic showman who obviously loves the job, moving out with drive and covering the ground with ease.

1st RAGNAROK ONE STEP BEYOND (MR D WILSON)
Well balanced, masculine white with a lovely head in profile and sufficient width and fill, mouth is correct. Good straight front with plenty of bone and substance, decent neck, good shoulder and strong topline with good quarters. Really pulled it together at decision time. It was a close decision between him and 2nd and he took the class on correct bite and showmanship.
2nd ELLAKRU MAVERICK AT EXQUIZABULL (MRS M QUINN)
I liked this lad who caught my eye from the get go, white, more terrier in type than 1. with a good strong, masculine head having arc width and fill, mouth is a reverse scissor. Very well balanced, foursquare with a good neck, shoulder and topline plus good strong quarters - he moved extremely well both ways. He went rather off the boil at decision time and that, combined with his mouth pushed him into 2nd
3rd JASNA DIAMOND NOIR (MR J PAGE)
Tricolour, disappeared before I could do a critique I recall a compact dog with a strong, well filled head who was giving his handler a bit of a hard time

1st ABGAR THE GYPSY KING (MR & MISS G & A NEWBERRY & BARTKOWIAK)
A very smart and masculine brindle and white who took the class with some in hand. Head is strong with correct arc, width and fill. Not the easiest dog to handle I’m sure but when he stands up it is clear he is well made with a good neck, shoulder and topline. He’s got strong quarters and proved to be a good mover when settled, covering the ground with ease. Easier said than done perhaps but maybe try moving him at a slightly slower pace.
2nd JASNA DIRTY DEALER (MR & MRS R & D SCOTT)
Upstanding red and white, super masculine with a big strong head, having arc and width, I’d like perhaps a little more fill and he has one instanding canine. Not quite the balance of the winner, he’s a little longer in back and a slightly loose on the move but, that said, he covered the ground freely.
3rd RAZORSEDGE PRINCE CHARMING (MISS E PULLEN)
Terrier type white, decent, masculine head although not quite the strength of 1 and 2 but he has a correct bite and a super expression. A very neat and well balanced dog with a straight front, good shoulder, topline and strong quarters. Very well handled and moving well both ways.

It has to be said that I felt quite ‘exercised’ after judging this class! 1st and 2nd are of such different types but each has such outstanding quality.
1st CH BILBOEN PICKPOCKET (MR & MRS J & A YOUNG)
White, an outstanding showman and on his toes the whole time. I’ve heard a lot of comments about his head, not all positive, but for me it was certainly not ‘too much’. He has a sweeping profile for sure but he also has sufficient width and fill, added to which, his mouth is spot on, all finished off with a super expression. A big dog, super masculine, with plenty of bone and substance added to which he is superbly balanced having a great neck and shoulder, straight front, short back, correct topline and strong quarters. He moved well in front, kept his topline from the side but was a little close behind. At decision time, he just filled my eye. DCC
2nd CH AUS CH BULROARUS MIGHT N POWER (IMP AUS) (MR & MRS & MR P & A & T BLAIR & WISEMAN)
Outstanding heavyweight white with a great head having arc, depth and width, it is filled right up with a correct bite and an excellent expression. A superbly masculine dog with masses of bone and substance, he’s not quite as compact as the winner being a little longer in back and a little looser in front but he has well angulated quarters, moved extremely well behind. Expertly handled, he pushed hard in the challenge. RDCC
3rd IR CH DEMOLITIONFORCE TARASBULBA (MS P BEARY)
A beautiful rich red and white, this lad has a really super head with and excellent sweeping profile and plenty of fill. To be picky I’d prefer a better length of neck but he’s a good straight front, well balanced and moving well from all angles.

1st KIRKBY GLISTENING SNOW AT ADRELLBULZ (MISS L M DAVISON)
What a lovely girl, extremely substantial white and the oldest of the group at 9 years with a lovely strong yet feminine head, having arc, width and fill, mouth is correct. Lots of bone and substance – and dare I say – just a little on the plump side – she is very typey with a good straight front and was the best mover in the class. My tape recording finished with ‘Loved Her’.
2nd UKUSA FORTUITOUS AT JASNA (MRS & MR A & J GIBBS)
Upstanding active red and white who obviously doesn’t feel like a veteran! Strong feminine head but not quite the strength of the winner, lovely neck, good shoulder and topline into well angulated quarters, she covered the ground with ease.
3rd LOUKA MASKED MAIDEN (MISS K MALDEN)
Pretty red and white, very attractive and typey and it was a tight decision between her and 2 - she just lost out a little on her shoulder and topline. She had a lovely front and moved very freely.

1st VENUS BACK FLASH AT BULLWIZZ (MR A LEIGH)
Lovely, typey brindle and white with a super head having arc, width and fill, mouth is perfect. She is well marked and the brindle is really well striped. Well balanced with a good length of neck, into a decent shoulder and topline – her handler needs to keep her on her toes and watch out for her ‘slumping’ - broad chest and straight front with elbows tucked in. Good quarters but rather close on the move behind. I’d suggest her owner gets someone to pace her and establish what her best speed is. Please to award her Best Puppy BP
2nd SANSARABULL SINFUL DESIRE (MRS M LEISTRUMIENE)
Very pretty red and white girl with a lovely sweeping profile if not quite the width and fill of the winner, her mouth is perfect. Much less mature than the winner, she just needs time to body up and settle.

1st BILBOEN RENAISSANCE (MR ADRIAN MOUNTAIN)
Lovely classical white with a strong, feminine head having a good expression with correct arc, width and fill, to be picky ears are just a little on the large side (she was not on her own in this). Lovely straight front, broad chest, correct shoulder and topline, another one with a tendency to slump and her handler just needs to watch out for this and keep her on her toes. Strong quarters with a good bend of stifle and strong second thigh, she was the best mover in the class and this helped her take first place.
2nd CIGANO'S THE GODDESS (MR D SULLIVAN)
Really typey white with a pleasing, feminine head having a correct bite and good expression. She doesn’t have the substance of winner and is less mature, but has a good neck and shoulder - her handler needs to be careful not to string her up and to remember to drop the lead onto her shoulders to make the most of her lovely outline. Front needs to tighten and a little more muscle would improve her quarters – I’d recommend some good steady roadwork to improve both of these points.
3rd BULLGATTI INFERNO BY SHELBYBULLZ (MRS N MAYNARD)
Eye-catching red and white who was not co-operating too well with handler, she has a really beautiful head with super profile and finish, good width and fill, a lovely dark eye and a perfect mouth, just needs to mature and settle.

Beautiful, typey white with a superb head having a sweeping arc, width, depth, fill and a perfect mouth, to be really picky her ears could be a little more on top. Compact and foursquare she presented a beautiful outline showing off a good length of neck into a super shoulder and correct front. Level topline and strong well angulated quarters. She moved well in front and kept her topline but was rather close behind. She took the class with some in hand and then pushed hard in the final lineup, only losing out on top honours as both CC and RCC winners moved out so well behind. I am sure her title is only a matter of time.

1st CLANSMANN WICKED DEEJAY (MR & MISS K & A JOWERS)
Absolutely exquisite, typey white with a punishing expression, beautiful feminine head with sweeping arc, super depth, width and fill along with a perfect bite. Good broad chest and straight front with elbows well tucked in – to be picky I’d prefer tighter feet (there’s always something!). Not a big girl but maximum substance for her size and everything just where it should be and in perfect proportion - foursquare. Great length of neck into correct shoulder and topline, excellent quarters and easily the best mover in the class. Expertly handled. BCC BOB
2nd GORBAIN BARNESMORE WALTZING MATILDA (MR & MRS P J & E J SEWARDS)
2nd and 3rd were quite hard to split, this white is an upstanding classical bitch with a beautiful head having arc, width and fill and a perfect bite, I would like a smaller eye. Lovely neck and shoulder and good straight front, slightly longer in back than 1 but kept her topline on the move, she had strong quarters, moved well in front but a little close behind.
3rd PHOENIXSCAR MYTHICAL MAGIC (MR & MRS R R & M C SMITHSON)
Another lovely classical white, her head is super with arc, width and fill and a correct mouth. Good neck and lovely broad chest but not quite the shoulder and topline of 2nd – that said, if her handler keeps her interested and active, he can definitely help with this. Substantial girl with lots of bone and substance, good neck and strong broad chest. She has super strong quarters and was easily the best mover in the class. 2nd BARNESMORE ICE ANGEL GORBAIN (MISS & MR S E & R L THOMPSON & WOODWARD)
Upstanding, classical white who I think still has some maturing to do. Feminine head with arc, width and fill, her mouth is correct but not the overall strength in head of the winner, on the downside I found her ears a little large. Viewed side on, she presents a beautiful outline with an elegant neck, good shoulder and topline, deep brisket and well angulated quarters. She moved well in front but was a little close behind.
3rd CH ASTASIA SHIRO OJO (MR & MRS & MISS S & A & M WALKER & JENNINGS)
Typey and foursquare white with a pretty, feminine head having arc, width, sufficient fill, a punishing expression and a perfect mouth. Not the strength of head of the winner. Compact and more terrier type with plenty of bone for her size, her outline is superb having a lovely elegant neck into super shoulders a cracking front, lovely short back with that rarity, a correct tail carriage.
