What can I say? An entry of 90 minis at Crufts is the stuff of dreams and so it was with great excitement, anticipation and not a little pride that I entered the fray. It’s more than fair to say I had some VERY tough decisions to make, in Open bitch the tiniest of split-hairs were all that separated 1st and 5th and I’d have happily handed out seven or eight bitch CCs overall. Like wise the unbeaten Dog line up was a sight for sore eyes and the CC was very hard won. I would like to thank all the exhibitors, not only for putting their trust in me to go over their dogs and to place them in (what I believed to be) the correct order, but also for treating all the decisions with great sportsmanship.
Size remains an issue but often the bigger dogs have exceptional quality and so I’d continue to urge breeders not to sacrifice that quality in too quick a pursuit of size – breeding great dogs is a marathon, not a sprint. We are still battling with upright shoulders and lack of balance and, a particular bug-bear, I saw far too many round or ‘kind’ eyes; eyes of correct size, shape and placement are essential for the breed’s distinctive expression and these were few and far between. I would urge breeders to give this important feature greater consideration when you’re planning your next litter.

Handsome, masculine and well balanced red and white. Very well constructed with a correct shoulder, topline and strong well-muscled quarters, perhaps would like a little more bend of stifle. Strong, masculine head with a perfect mouth.
2nd JENKIR THOR (MRS J HARRISON)
Black brindle and white with a strong, masculine head and correct mouth. Presented in super condition, with excellent bone and substance but a tad upright in shoulder and just losing lost out to the winner’s super make and shape

1st FUTURE STAR VOM HAUSE WILKE ATCAT00055DEU (N WILKE)
Solid black brindle and white of an excellent size, masculine and well balanced with plenty of substance for size. Lovely head with arc, width, fill and turn and correct bite. Super straight front and good neck, the shoulder was a tad upright but when he was up on his toes his topline pulled together nicely making a lovely outline. He moved exceptionally well behind and took the class with some in hand. His title must be just a question of time.
2nd BADLESMERE BLOWN AWAY AT STEMONE (MRS S NELSON)
Larger but very attractive brindle and white lad. Strong head with width, fill and turn, mouth is a reverse scissor. He was rather a reluctant showman, a tad long cast and would benefit by carrying a little more weight. He moved well both ways but not quite covering the ground as much as the winner

1st AMINIRUMPUS NANOOK BEAR (MR & MISS J & S J KOCABA & WHITE)
White dog with a superb head; long, wide, deep, filled right up and with a super finish, all topped off with a truly punishing expression. Good straight front, feet a little flat and untidy - perhaps some hard roadwork might benefit? Decent shoulder and topline with good strong quarters, he moved more than adequately. Excellent bone and substance, I’m not going to pretend he wasn’t one of the bigger dogs but that notwithstanding, with his exceptional virtues he more than deserved to take the class.
2nd LAFENICE JOEY TRIBIANI (MISS K A LEWIS)
Corking little dog who really took my eye. Better size than the winner, another lovely head with arc, width, fill and turn; a smaller eye would complete the picture and he’s let down by a full reverse scissor bite. To nit-pick, he could be a tad shorter in the back but he’s a superb showman, very well handled and really pulls himself together to make a lovely outline. To top it off he moved like a bomb both ways.
3rd SEAQUEST EL SID (MRS M CHITTY)
Deserves a mention - another lovely little dog, masculine, quality with lots of bone and substance and again moved like a train both ways. Lovely head with arc, width and fill, sadly his cross to bear is a rather round eye and 2 instanding canines – but what a smart little package

Another tough class, full of quality but again needing virtues weighing against faults so plenty of interesting decisions
1st SEAQUEST SMOOTH OPERATOR FOR ANDRIONA (MISS F NICHOLL)
Ok he’s another big one and my first thought was he was maybe too big, however, as I worked my way round the class and came to placing them, I moved him up next to the others in contention and found he wasn’t that much bigger and so took the class based on his overall superb quality. Excellent head which has arc, width, full and turn. Sadly he is also ‘blessed’ with two instanding canines but, again, I felt he could live with them. He has a beautiful brindle jacket and presents a balanced quality image with a correct shoulder, topline and well-angulated quarters.
2nd WENGORMICK PETITE PIRATE (MRS & MS W & K WHITTAKER)
White dog who really showed his socks off, making the very best of himself and very well handled. Not quite the quality of head of the winner, a little more arc and fill would complete the picture but his mouth is correct. Lovely strong, round bone, decent shoulder and topline, strong quarters with a good second thigh, moving well both ways. Very typy and masculine.

1st CH BULLYPINS KLASSIKOS (MR & MRS A & M LLEWELLYN) DCC BOB
This little dog is a beautiful quality boy, black brindle and white with a most spectacular head having super arc, width, fill and turn – indeed any more would be too much. He’s not perfect by any means; he’s a reverse scissor bite and I’d prefer a smaller eye and a better rear action but with his superb quality, type, size and balance, along with his masculinity, bone and substance, he deservedly took this super, strong class. Correctly used at stud, to the right bitches, he could be a quantum leap forward for the breed.

An old favourite. Another Black brindle and white with a super masculine head, great profile and width with a perfect mouth, but another needing a smaller eye. I dislike the overseas fashion for ‘stringing them up’ and this boy certainly doesn’t need it having a good neck, front and shoulder. Strong quarters but, again, a little disappointing on the move. Took 2nd place on his overall quality, type and balance.

Brindle and white in excellent hard fit condition, 9 years old. Good strong head with width and fill, perfect mouth. Lovely body lines, strong and compact and moving well both ways – beautifully presented and handled.

10.5 years, very pretty, feminine bitch with a lovely head having arc width and fill and a correct mouth. Just beginning to show her age a little and not quite the body lines of the winner but a real cracker.

Solid brindle of a lovely size who really impressed in this class. Beautiful feminine head with arc, width, turn and finish and lovely small ears; another one who’d benefit from a smaller eye. Super straight front, decent shoulder and topline. I’d like a little more strength in the quarters but she covered the ground well both ways. Well presented and handled, I loved her quality and her super mini type.

Attractive white who’s also good for size; a strong head with a good expression but would like a little more fill, her mouth is a reverse scissor. Not the shoulder or topline of the winner and not quite the front but lovely quarters, which she used extremely well on the move. She took second place on her better size, the other two in the class being larger types

Brindle and white bitch. Extremely feminine and attractive bitch of excellent quality who really caught my eye. Lovely head with arc, width, turn and a perfect mouth; again I would prefer a smaller eye. Elegant neck, good shoulder and topline and well balanced, she moved well both ways. A little more bone would complete the picture, well-handled and beautifully presented.

Tricolour bitch of a completely different type, being considerably bigger but also really beautiful and full of quality. Strong head, again with arc, width, fill and turn but one instanding canine. She took 2nd place on her virtues: great balance, correct shoulder, front and topline. Quarters very strong when standing but just a little disappointing on the move

Beautiful headed bitch, lovely arc, width and filled right up with a good finish, decent eye but sadly undershot. Well marked and very smart she looked well-constructed when standing but was very disappointing on the move behind.

Brindle and white with a beautiful strong, quality head, correct arc, width, turn and finish; I would again prefer a slightly smaller eye, but her mouth is perfect. Very well marked, with excellent bone and substance and super construction; a good shoulder, topline, straight front and strong quarters she moved extremely well both ways. What’s not to like?

This black brindle and white is a real favourite of mine and it was a tough call. Very pretty feminine head with arc, width and fill but not just the power of the winner. She’s exceptionally well-balanced with a great front, shoulder, topline and quarters which all came together on the move, being parallel both ways. She was the best mover of the day. Beautifully presented and well handled,

Beautifully headed black brindle and white; sweeping profile, width, fill, turn and a perfect mouth. Good bone and substance but just a little upright and not the construction and movement of 1 and 2.

White who I’ve admired greatly and it was a difficult decision between 3 and 4; this girl had the better construction and body lines with 3rd having the stronger head.

First, I would like to thank Committee of West of England Ladies´ Kennel Society for inviting me to judge their 2016 Show, this was my first Championship Show appointment in UK. I thank all exhibitors for their time and for bringing out their dogs.
Overall I was pleased with the quality of entered dogs. Loved all dogs who I placed in classes, sadly there is only one first place and one winner at the end. However, I feel a need to comment on few things that caught my eyes and gave me cause for concern. I looked for dogs with high quality meeting breed standard, free and flowing movement with great attitude. Sadly I saw poor movement in quite a number of exhibits. A few exhibits which made great impression in standing, disappointed me on the move. I'm also concerned about soft toplines, size differents and mouths.
Finally I must admit, all my CC and RCC winners would easily win worldwide.

I was so shocked to find so many inverted canines in the breed. I do consider this a serious health issue and felt it my duty to abide by KC directives and withhold prizes where I thought there was a serious health issue. I considered slightly undershot or dropped incisors to be a fault only and placed those dogs, as I did the fat dogs, high tail set dogs and oversized dogs. This is the most I have ever withheld in any breed at a Ch show in this country, and can only say to breeders that you really should address this fault as a matter of urgency. There were enough males and females present with perfect bites to be used in breeding. The winners were lovely examples of the breed. Pleased to hear it was the males third CC and the bitch's fifth CC, with two very good Terriers in Reserve spots. I did think carefully about my actions and realise as an exhibitor myself just how costly it is to attend shows. I could not let this grave fault pass however, and hope that things improve in the next few years.

It was a genuine pleasure to judge my very first MBTC show – no one can accuse me of rushing, it being 43 years since I first joined the committee. On this basis I’ve already pencilled in my return appointment to coincide with my 102nd birthday! I thank the committee for their kind invitation to judge this international show, comprising so many top-class exhibits from home and abroad (one team had a round-trip of 3200 kilometres for the weekend!). This was without doubt the best entry of Minis it has been my pleasure to judge, both numerically (92 dogs making 100 entries, of which 75 joined battle on the day) and with unprecedented depth of quality. In two of my bitch classes I could have juggled 7-8 of them into any of the places and happily justified it, resulting in some top-class bitches being left unplaced!

Tough call: this black and white youngster was very typy with a good, strong, well-filled head with finish and perfect mouth, save for one tight canine – would just like a little more arc. Good for size with plenty of bone and substance, with an adequate front.

Very shapely and well-balanced red and white Good topline into shapely quarters and moving well behind. Plenty of bone and substance, losing ground on size, mouth fault and front needs to tighten.

A little unsure of himself, looks a picture standing with an adequate shoulder, good front and shapely quarters. Moved well in front, but a bit over the measure and disappointing rear action.
2nd FLASH LITTLE TANGO VOM HAUSE WILKE ( S DEUTSCHMANN-CIRILLO)
A tidy solid brindle losing out in head to the winner, not having the same width, fill and although it’s dark, would like smaller eye. A good topline, also a bit over the measure, has a good shoulder, shapely quarters which he used to good effect on the move.

Exceptional Bull Terrier at any size, but also good for size in the miniature ranks. A really outstanding solid tri: a terrific masculine head with arc, width, fill, depth, a punishing expression, with a correct mouth save for a pincer bit. A picture standing; he has a long neck into good shoulders and straight front. Plenty of substance with a short back and shapely quarters, moving like a dream behind. Took the class with some in hand, before going on to be a strong winner of the CC and BOB.

Close call between 2 and 3. Very typy with a super head, having excellent width, fill and superb expression – canines are correct, mouth a reverse scissor. Excellent bone and substance. Well balanced, stands four-square, moving well both ways.

The toughest dog class of the day; full of quality across a range of types, requiring the weighing of distinct virtues and faults of most, against comparative quality but several equally different virtues and faults of others - so plenty of demanding and hair-splitting decisions.
1st AMINIRUMPUS NANOOK BEAR (MR & MISS J & S J KOCABA & WHITE) RDCC
Well oversize white, but in the company of a number of oversized dogs in the class – I went for the overall package. Superb type: lovely head, arc, turn, finish, fill, depth and a punishing well-placed dark eye. Beautifully balanced, standing four-square with excellent bone and substance. Good reach of neck into well-laid shoulders and front, feet could be tighter. Good topline, well angulated quarters and moving well behind when he got into his stride.
2nd WENGORMICK PETITE PIRATE (MRS & MS W & K WHITTAKER)

A very typy black brindle and white of only six months, but also quite the finished package. Beautiful feminine type, she stood and made the best of herself like a seasoned campaigner from start to finish. Lovely strong well filled head with good profile, fill, width, finish, a perfect mouth, with good ears and lovely alert expression. Well-constructed she has a good shoulder and shapely quarters, moving well both ways. A really lovely baby and one to watch going forward.
2nd BADLESMERE BLACKSTAR (MR & MRS P & N DRAPER)
This attractive almost solid brindle took a very strong second place, not a lot wrong with her, but has lots to like. Good, strong head with arc, width and fill. Good bone and substance, straight front and correct topline into shapely quarters, moving well behind - Managing to squeeze good quality bitches into 3rd and 4th.

Good reach in to correct shoulder, straight in front if toeing out slightly and moved well both ways. A strong winner in a tough class in which her strong performance paid dividends.

Tough call: an excellent, strong well arced and head on this attractive red and white, albeit with a number of misplaced incisors. Not as short a back as the winner and would like more rear angulation, however, she was another good mover both ways.

I was absolutely thrilled to be invited to judge my first set of CCs at the Southern Miniature Bull Terrier Club. Judging Minis is always a challenge and I had to think long and hard about what it was that I deem virtues and try to find dogs which embodied the majority of those virtues for me. I am very grateful for the excellent entry of 50 with few absentees and for the exhibitors who came out to give me the opportunity to go over their lovely dogs.

White dog puppy, 8 months. Oozes breed type and masculinity. Substantial and balanced. Short back and with plenty of round bone. Straight front with good lay of shoulder and width of loin. Good rear angulation. Fabulous head with excellent expression, small keen eye. Unbroken profile, head packed right up and turned with finish. Minor mouth fault. Moved true both ways and held topline for the few moments he settled to show his true movement. Very nice baby. BP

Over the measure, but not excessively so. Very much enjoyed going over him.

Just referred the overall package of 1, but whose quality and make and shape demanded my attention.

Caught my eye immediately. 10 months. Classically elegant white bitch with double brindle eye patches. Good bone for size. Fabulous gun barrel front and forechest with correct lay of shoulder including a decent length of upper arm. Lovely feminine head with fill up under eyes, piecing expression, topped off with a perfect mouth. Would prefer neater ears. Moved to perfection both ways, striding out with power which earned her the Joanne Cup for Best Movement. One to watch.

Solid brindle bitch. 2 years. Quality, typy girl. Very neat and tidy. Just over measure. Plenty of substance with good lay of shoulder and rear angulation. Straight front. Moved reasonably both ways. Mouth fault, but her virtues carried her through. Good head with fill and gentle downturn. Pushed hard in the challenge

Black brindle and white bitch. 4 years. Over the measure, but good for make and shape. Lovely length of neck into good shoulder and rear angulation with good tail set. Would prefer slightly shorter in the back. Lacked the substance of one. Pretty, feminine head with perfect mouth. Would prefer more fill. Moved well both ways and showed as usual, with verve

White bitch. 8 years. Good for size and substance. Nice front and rear angulation. Nicely made throughout and has a correct bite with pretty much all her teeth! Lacks a little in fill of head, but a lovely old lady, enjoying her time to show off.
