Yes, he could benefit with more length of upper arm, however he is a powerful mover. He has much to offer the breed, for type and size and super temperament.

Handled to perfection by Gerard Cox. A true showman and show dog. Rich red, brindle and white, in superb fit, coat and condition. Excellent head, width, depth and finish. Correct expression, well placed ears. Perfect large bite. Strong neck, straight front, well angulated in hind quarters, moved with drive, proud of his tail and could have more lay back of shoulder. However, he could not be denied his placement. After a long journey, and a hard day's exhibiting, this dog came out of the group, and enjoyed the fuss and the attention of a family with small children. True Mini temperament. I loved him. GROUP 3 the Min Bull Terrier, Ch/Ir Ch Grasco’s Honky Tonky, is such a striking brindle & white, it is not often this breed produces the goods & I couldn’t overlook him, he has presence as well as beauty & never stops showing, he has a strongly built muscular frame with a determined intelligent eye & expression set into the classic head, a strong, long neck flows into a short back, he has strong rounded well sprung ribs with the slight arch over the loin, the correct bone & substance for his breed with the plus of good movement.

I would like to thank the officers and committee of The National for inviting me to judge my two favourite breeds at their show and for their excellent hospitality. My entry of 46 Miniatures was very pleasing and with just 6 absent gave me, in some classes, some very difficult decisions! I last judged 3 years ago and although we have had the DNA test now for some time, size is still a problem, but one which I feel is slowly getting better. As before I feel the bitches were stronger in depth with the open bitch class full of quality which bodes well for the breed!! First and foremost I was looking for a SHOW dog with attitude coupled with breed type and felt that all my winners had this in abundance!

Black brindle and white, my star of the day! lovely dog from all angles in pristine condition, spot on the measure and showed correct balance to size, a real bull terrier in miniature, powerful masculine head with turn and fill, slight mouth fault, ears bang on top which he used well. Long strong neck to good shoulders and topline, tail well set and movement true for and aft and in typical jaunty style and best of the class! Showed like a bomb! Lovely upstanding tri who looked good from all angles, in pristine condition, although a little over the measure showed correct balance to size, powerful yet feminine head with turn and fill and with the best profile of the day which unfortunately probably accounted for the mouth fault, ears bang on top which she used well, most wicked of expressions attained by desired eye shape, long strong neck to good shoulders and short back with good top line held well on move which was true fore and aft. Although the numbers were typically low for this show, absentees were light and I was delighted with the overall quality and thank everyone for making the journey. Most tipped the measure to some extent, ranging from very slight to 2” plus, presenting the usual challenge of striking a balance across type, construction and size, with a number of mouth faults adding to the mix.

Even younger baby of only 6 months. Although not the substance of the winner and a little uncoordinated at this stage, he is shapely and has everything to play for.

A corking black brindle and white marking a step-change in breed type. A thumping head, although would like a little more length, which is beautifully arced, oozing width and fill. An unusual mouth: his canines and jaws are correct, although some upper incisors lean inwards. Would like smaller eye. He’s four-square and very shapely, being balanced with a good topline and shoulder, moving well both ways. DCC & BOB

Imposing all-white with bags of bone and substance. A beautiful head, having arc, width, fill, depth and turn, with a level bite. Well-placed, dark eye and good ear placement present a punishing expression. A decent front, good feet and level topline into shapely quarters moving well both ways. He is a good 2” over the measure, when combined with his tremendous bone, substance and round chest creating the appearance of being larger still. Accepting that ALL dogs in contention were over the measure, size was therefore a matter of degree, with his superior type, masculinity and substance compensating for his extra height. RDCC

Tough call between 1 and 2. Upstanding white, shapely and well balanced, with greater good bone and substance. Masculine with a strong head, also needing a bit more arc, has a perfect mouth and also moved well. Little between them, with his little extra height just tipping the scales.

Quality and typy red and white with a good head in profile, with width and fill, unfortunately one instanding canine. Four-square, she moved well both ways: a close call for top spot, she just needs perk-up to make the most of her strong virtues.

I would like to thank the committee of Border Union for their excellent hospitality. I would also like to thank all the exhibitors who supported me at one of the most scenic show venues in the UK, but also one of the most difficult to get to. Although I had a few exhibits with incorrect bites and misplaced canines, I judged to the KC breed standard and found no reason to withhold any placements due to health issues or mouth faults.

My sincere thanks to all the exhibitors that came from near and far, to make up a record entry of 107 minis. A dream come true for me so thank you all. Some very tough decisions had to be made, but again thank you for the sportsmanship that was given. Mouths on the whole where good, just a handful of In Standing canines, and as I'm not a vet who am I to say the dogs found them painful, they certainly didn't look it to me. A few undershot and a couple of minor miss placed teeth. Temperaments where very good, a few dogs spooked in the ring due to traffic noise. Rear movement seems to be missing these days! So A new venue, but not the right one, it was like judging in a corridor, with an assault course, the table very much in the way in the middle of the room, made it hard to access the dogs, I did ask for it to be moved, but was told it had to stay there. Far to many distractions going on, balloons, open doors with at times very heavy traffic noise, making the dogs uneasy, music was also to loud, at times it had more of a carnival atmosphere than a dog show. Biggest distraction was that the spectators along the side of the ring, where on top of the mats and way to close to the dogs when they where moving, not only where people hanging over the barriers, but there feet where on the mats, so much so it put lots of dogs off the job in hand. I do think less is best for dog showing. My apologies for the missing owners and some ages of dogs, as these dogs where not in the catalogue and that's all I had to go off.

Many thanks to the exhibitors for the sizable entry, especially for a weekday; unfortunately there were some absentees but I had a thoroughly enjoyable morning. Although out of my control, I can only apologise for the wobbly table, regrettably my stewards only managed to sort out a replacement too late for my exhibits!
It’s been several years since I last judged my favourite breed at this level, on the plus side I found temperaments to be superb, plus on the whole, movement appears to have improved. However, on the down side, steep upper arms with corresponding upright shoulders appear to be the norm these days and this really affects the outline and the overall balance of the dog.
Another big problem, with the exception of a handful of correct scissor bites, were mouths. These ranged from uneven teeth, to undershot jaws, to both canines on such a narrow lower jaw they were growing up on the inside of the roof of the mouth. I also noticed teeth that had been filed and one exhibits teeth looked like they had actually been clipped. However, these are not disqualifying faults and I judged accordingly to the degree of the problem, accounting for other virtues and faults. Only a couple of exhibits on the measure, the rest were all over but I was more than happy with both my line ups and I found my main winners most pleasing. Finally, I must just mention the dirtiest exhibit I have ever encountered in 25 years of judging dogs; surely a bath, if needed, before presenting at a show isn’t too much to ask?

He has an unbroken curve to his well-filled, power packed head, to be hypercritical perhaps a tad more length would not go amiss and he has a rather round eye. Incorrect mouth. Shoulders OK and short backed, moving well coming but today, throwing out a back leg as he moved away. In good, hard show condition.

The word stylish springs to mind with this lad. He has a good profile with enough fill and turn, using his ears well. Mouth incorrect. He has a beautiful outline. He is very well schooled, moving well enough in front but a touch close behind.

A typy young black brindle and white who just oozes quality. He has a good headpiece with plenty of curve and fill, a dark eye, small neat ears but with one tight canine. He has a beautiful outline, all topped off with a glossy coat. He moved very accurately but would benefit from a little more roadwork. What a handsome chap, pleased to award him the DCC

This brindle and white lad looked a picture when standing but short in upper arm and a tad loaded on the shoulder. Has a good expression, plenty of bone and enough spring in his ribs, movement rather choppy.

A little slack in the pastern which makes her look slightly short on the leg, but moving well with her proficient handler.

White with a black eye of differing type to 1. She has a feminine head with a correct bite. She is very tall, well over the measure but a better shoulder placement than 1. She has good angulation both ends with enough bone neat feet, moved OK.

I loved this bitch the first time I saw her out as a pup, she is a good rich red/white girl, her head is well filled with an unbroken profile with an eye that gives that fabulous bully expression. She has very good markings. She has a nice straight front with good shoulder placement. To be pedantic, perhaps I would prefer to see her a tad shorter in the back. Well angulated quarters which she used and moved with drive when she got going. In tip top condition I was pleased to award her the BCC and BOB. I discovered afterwards that this make her up, well done.

A very well-schooled red and white, a strong, but feminine girl, similar to 1 in not only colour but in stature as well. She has enough profile for me, one canine in, strong neck, good topline, enough rib, muscular hindquarters and moved typically with very slick handling RBCC

Beautiful white dog of a good size, I was quite taken with him, he was the smallest in the class. He has a correct front, neat feet but I feel he would benefit from being moved at a slightly faster pace.

A typy young black brindle and white who just oozes quality. He has a good headpiece with plenty of curve and fill, a dark eye, small neat ears but with one tight canine. He has a beautiful outline, all topped off with a glossy coat. He moved very accurately but would benefit from a little more roadwork. What a handsome chap, pleased to award him the DCC
2nd LAFENICE TAMINO OF CALIBER (MS A, MR W and MRS C PEACHER and LAMBERT)
This brindle and white lad looked a picture when standing but short in upper arm and a tad loaded on the shoulder. Has a good expression, plenty of bone and enough spring in his ribs, movement rather choppy.

A taller bitch with a feminine headpiece, very well made all through and although a little up on the leg looked nicely balanced.

Excellent presentation on this beautiful young white bitch with black ears. Good head with a strong under jaw and correct bite. Good depth of chest with a strong loin and well angulated quarters. A little slack in the pastern which makes her look slightly short on the leg, but moving well with her proficient handler.
2nd QUAYARDSON LADY DELACOUR (MRS A and MR R BENNETT and PICKERING)
She is a lovely rich solid brindle junior bitch with a pleasing head, but incorrect mouth. Shoulders OK plenty of depth and very compact, moves out well. I’m looking forward to seeing her when fully mature. 3rd BADLESMERE BLACK DAHLIA (MR P and MRS N DRAPER)

White with a black eye of differing type to 1. She has a feminine head with a correct bite. She is very tall, well over the measure but a better shoulder placement than 1. She has good angulation both ends with enough bone neat feet, moved OK.

I loved this bitch the first time I saw her out as a pup, she is a good rich red/white girl, her head is well filled with an unbroken profile with an eye that gives that fabulous bully expression. She has very good markings. She has a nice straight front with good shoulder placement. To be pedantic, perhaps I would prefer to see her a tad shorter in the back. Well angulated quarters which she used and moved with drive when she got going. In tip top condition I was pleased to award her the BCC and BOB. I discovered afterwards that this make her up, well done.

Thank you to the Welsh Kennel Club for inviting me to judge the Miniature Bull Terriers at their show. I would like to thank all the exhibitors for giving me the honour of going over their dogs. Over the years of judging the breed the size has crept up to the point where it has now become a major issue for the breed. I hope that all breeders and exhibitors will strongly consider this when they plan their future matings before the essence of the breed is lost. Over my period of time in the breed the quality of miniatures has most certainly improved and it is now the difficult task of getting them into that small package.

Glad to see the breed making so much progress & just hope they can now begin to shrink a bit! The open dog class made my day. It wasn’t so long ago with the males that, apart from one or possibly two, you were scratching around to find anything of remotely CC quality. Today I was faced with a class of eight, any one of which I would have been happy to award a CC, congratulations breeders! Even better, quite a few of them moved true as well, though some who were good coming & going tended to bounce rather in front when viewed from the side. A high proportion of perfect mouths with good size teeth, a few slightly undershot or reverse scissor. All but a few had OK canines, some rather tight.
